IPL 2020: When you are in a position like we are, you have nothing to lose, says RR’s Ben Stokes

Image
A seven-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab ensured Rajasthan Royals maintained their new-found momentum in the ongoing Indian Premier League and Ben Stokes said that having little to lose has spurred the team. RR had beaten defending champions and this edition’s in-from team, Mumbai Indians by eight wickets before this to stay in the hunt. IPL 2020 playoffs qualification scenarios: KXIP’s defeat against RR keeps multiple teams in the hunt Stokes, who was adjudged the Player of the Match for his all-round show, said he came into the game with the same mentality as he did against Mumbai Indians. He smashed a breezy 50 and also claimed two wickets. “I think when you are in a position like we are, you have nothing to lose. We are still hanging in. That is pleasing. The sixes are always pleasing. I went in the same mentality like I did against MI. Wanted to go hard with the new ball,” Stokes said. “We had a decent break from the last game. We normally have a quick turnaround. I cut dow...

Indian boxing: Amit Panghal, Sanjeet strike gold; Kavinder Bisht takes silver in French tournament

Image
World silver-medallist Amit Panghal (52kg) and Sanjeet (91kg) struck gold in their first competition after a coronavirus-forced break, claiming the top honours at the Alexis Vastine International Boxing Tournament in Nantes, France. In the 75kg category, Asian silver-winner Ashish Kumar also claimed a gold after his opponent, American Joseph Gerome Hiks, gave him a walkover due to injury. Panghal, an Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medallist, defeated American Rene Abraham 3-0 with a dominating performance on Friday night. Sanjeet, a former India Open gold-medallist, too put up a clinical show to get past Frenchman Soheb Bouafia in his summit clash and secure a gold. However, Asian silver-medallist Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg) got the silver after going down to local favourite Samuel Kistohurry in a split 2-1 verdict. India had earlier secured three bronze medals through four-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa (63kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg). All three of t...

IPL 2020, RCB vs SRH preview: Kohli and Co eye playoff spot as Hyderabad look to survive

Image
With a playoffs spot at stake, Royal Challengers Bangalore will look to shrug off the disappointment of back-to-back defeats when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League at Sharjah on Saturday. Virat Kohli and Co will have their work cut out as SRH will be confident after their crushing win over Delhi Capitals. #IPL2020 #QualificationScenarios After match No 50 in the IPL, two teams are on 14 points, while four other teams can also reach that tally, leaving six teams in the hunt for three spots. It's getting intense! Scenarios explained: https://t.co/aTuqtAgDhy — The Field (@thefield_in) October 31, 2020 Chennai Super Kings, who are the only ones to be out of reckoning, have spiced up the playoff race with their last-ball win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday night. Going by the current standings, RCB are better-placed at number two and they need to win one of their remaining two games – against SRH or DC – to make the cut. And even if RCB los...

‘Swallow’ review: A wealthy housewife has a secret that threatens to consume her

Image
Hunter is the wife of a wealthy and handsome man who has an enormous and beautifully furnished house with tall glass windows and an eye-watering view – but no domestic help. No matter. Hunter (Haley Bennett) is a neatness freak with a tendency to iron out all kinds of creases, even the ones on her husband’s silk tie. The garment is ruined, of course, and is among the warning signs that all isn’t well with this impeccably turned out housewife. Hunter has a disorder that threatens to consume her. She has an appetite for indelible objects – glass marbles, paper, what have you. Her secret is safe inside her until she gets pregnant. In a film filled with moments of suspense and dread, the scene in which Hunter reaches for a pointed object is straight out of a horror film. Is Hunter a fit case for institutionalisation or does she actually need empathy and a fair hearing? Haley Bennet’s tremendous central performance fills in the cracks in writer-director Carlo Mirabella-Davis’s first fea...

Pakistan vs Zimbabwe: Afridi, Riaz help hosts win first ODI despite Taylor’s century

Image
Shaheen Shah Afridi grabbed five wickets and Wahab Riaz took four as Pakistan thwarted a fighting Zimbabwe to win the first One-day International by 26 runs in Rawalpindi on Friday. Afridi finished with 5/49 while Riaz had figures of 4/41 as Pakistan survived a brilliant knock of 112 by Brendan Taylor, who put Zimbabwe briefly on course for an upset as they chased a daunting 282-run target. The experienced Taylor lifted Zimbabwe from a struggling 115/4 with a solid partnership of 119 for the fifth wicket with newcomer Wesley Madhevere, who finished with a career-best 55. Taylor knocked 11 boundaries and three well-timed sixes in his 117-ball knock, but holed out to Afridi at mid-off in the 47th over, leaving Pakistan to wrap up the last four wickets for just 15 runs. The win gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series with the remaining matches at the same venue on Sunday and Tuesday. They also claim 10 points in the World Cup One-Day Super League, which determines qualif...

Tennis: Lucky loser Sonego stuns Djokovic; Thiem, Medvedev out as top seeds sent packing in Vienna

Image
Novak Djokovic suffered his heaviest defeat in a three-set match on Friday when he was knocked out of the Vienna ATP tournament by lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego with a 6-2, 6-1 win. It was a day of top seed upsets as second seed Dominic Thiem was beaten by Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev fell to Kevin Anderson. Italian Sonego, ranked 42 and who had initially lost in qualifying last weekend, is the first lucky loser ever to beat Djokovic. His quarter-final stunner was 33-year-old Djokovic’s heaviest ever defeat. The only other time he had won just three games was at the 2005 Australian Open at the hands of Marat Safin in a best-of-five set encounter. Sonego fired 26 winners past Djokovic who lost for only the third time in 2020 against 39 victories. Djokovic, a 17-time major champion, managed just seven winners against 25 unforced errors. “For sure it’s the best victory of my life. Novak is the best in the world. Today I played so, so good,” Sonego said. “It’s unbelievable. It’s am...

IPL 2020, DC vs MI preview: With playoff spot at stake, Delhi seek to bounce back from three defeats

Image
With their playoff berth secured, defending champions Mumbai Indians would look to add to the woes of Delhi Capitals, who are on a three-match losing streak, and consolidate their position at the top when the two teams face each other in the Indian Premier League in Dubai on Saturday. Chennai Super Kings’ six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday sealed MI’s playoff berth. The defending champions, who are currently on 16 points and with an excellent net run-rate, are almost certain to finish in the top two. Despite three defeats on the trot against Kings XI Punjab, KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively, DC are placed third with 14 points from 12 games, courtesy their consistent run in the first phase of the league. The three defeats should come as an eye-opener for DC as they cannot afford to take things lightly and need at least a win to seal their play-off place. But it won’t be an easy task as their last two games are against the top two teams on the table – MI ...

Why is the BJP milking memories of Balakot –and ignoring current Chinese aggression in Ladakh?

Image
More than a year after the Pulwama suicide bombing in February 2019 and India’s retaliatory air strikes on a target in Pakistan’s Balakot, the incidents have suddenly surged back into public conversation. Matters were kicked off by Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, an MP of the Opposition Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), who on Wednesday claimed that Pakistan had actually released Indian fighter pilot Abhinandan – shot down during a dog fight with the Pakistan Air Force the day after the Balakot mission– under extreme duress because India was threatening war. Sadiq was graphic in his descriptions: Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa was perspiring and his “legs were shaking”, the MP claimed in Pakistan’s federal assembly. Pakistani claims As the controversy raged over Sadiq’s stunning claim, a Pakistani politician fired off another incredible statement. “We hit them [India] in their home,” Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry told the National Assembly on Thursday . “Our succ...

BJP says three men killed in South Kashmir were party workers. Friends, family refuse to accept it

Image
Around 8.20 pm on October 29, three men were killed in a shooting near a public prayer ground in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. At a hospital near YK Pora village, where the incident took place, they were declared “brought dead”. The police said the three men were members of the Bharatiya Janata Party – Fida Hussain Yatoo was the party’s Kulgam youth general secretary, Umar Ramzan Hajam and Haroon Rashid Beigh, were party workers. On Friday, Kashmir police chief Vijay Kumar told reporters the Lashkar-e-Taiba was responsible for the attack. “Fida was with his two colleagues in a car and the militants fired indiscriminately on them from close range,” he said. However, the families of the three slain men are anxious to distance themselves from the BJP. BJP under fire Altaf Thakur, a prominent BJP face in the Valley, said Thursday’s incident took the number of BJP workers and leaders killed in Kashmir this year to nine. Five of these killings took place in the districts of South K...

French minister says more attacks are likely as country is in war against enemy

Image
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Friday said that more attacks are likely in the country as it is fighting a war against Islamist extremism, Reuters reported. “We are in a war against an enemy that is both inside and outside,” Darmanin told French radio network RTL, according to the news agency. “We need to understand that there have been and there will be other events such as these terrible attacks.” Darmanin noted the frequency with which terror attacks took place in France in the last few weeks and said that “this has not happened since 2015”, Xinhua reported. The minister’s remarks came a day after a knife-wielding attacker killed three people at a church in Nice city. There has also been unrest in the country after the beheading of a teacher near Paris earlier this month. The teacher had showed caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in class before the attack. Following this, French President Emmanuel Macron had vowed a crackdown on “Islamic extremism”, according t...

‘Migrants’: This short story speaks for many of those forced to walk back home during the lockdown

Image
The heat radiating through the tin roof was unbearable. Muthaiyyan sat up and looked at the fuzzy silhouettes of his wife and child lying next to him. Both of them had lost a lot of weight due to lack of nutrition and care. Selvi was pregnant again. She was in her fifth month now. Muthaiyyan felt like crying. A lump formed in his throat as he thought about his helplessness and inability to provide two square meals to his pregnant wife and three year old daughter, Jyothi. He got up, noiselessly opened the tin door, came out and sat on the plastic chair by the door. A line of tin-roofed shacks, arranged like a goods train, lay before him. There were a few tall buildings, still under construction, a short distance away. The Medical College, Engineering College, Arts College, with their students’ hostels, guest houses, auditorium and other buildings, looked like ghostly shadows under the dim light of the street lamps. The private University campus being built on a hundred-acre plot was...

Pakistan minister admitting role in Pulwama attack silenced Centre’s critics, says Rajnath Singh

Image
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that Pakistan minister Fawad Chaudhry admitting to the country’s role in the Pulwama terror attack had revealed the truth and silenced the Centre’s critics, PTI reported. Chaudhry had backtracked after his comment drew criticism. “A Pakistani minister has revealed the truth in the Pulwama attack by giving a statement in the National Assembly,” Singh said at an election rally in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. “Pakistan has accepted that they were behind the Pulwama attack. Until now, they had been saying they were not involved in it.” Singh added: “Congress leaders had questioned our intent then. But now that a Pakistani minister has given a statement in the National Assembly that Pakistan was involved in the Pulwama attack, they are silent.” The defence minister said that the Congress and other Opposition parties always raised questions when the Centre worked “with all its strength” to protect the country. Singh added that the Congress’ ...

Hathras gangrape is a reminder that no party really cares about women or Dalits

Image
The Hathras gangrape has reminded us yet again of the cruelty that lies latent within us. It tells us how a woman’s body is used as a battlefield, used to punish her, her family and her community, or used for revenge. Cruelty, like grief, can never be quantified, but each case of rape, indeed of any violence towards a woman, seems to bring out cruelty in a different form. As if the perpetrators are inventively seeking new methods of brutality. The nineteen-year-old girl, in this case, was almost strangulated by her own dupatta, and her spine broken so that she was paralysed. Her suffering ended with her death, but the torment of her family continued, reaching an apogee when the police, refusing to hand over her body to the family, cremated her themselves in the middle of the night. Rather, they burnt her body as if it was a pile of trash, something to be got rid of. A picture of the burning pyre, surrounded by a cordon of outward-looking blank-faced policemen juxtaposed against the ...

Listen: Vasantrao Deshpande and Veena Sahasrabuddhe sing khayals that use Urdu

Image
Continuing our series on the use of multiple languages in khayal song-texts , we look at a few compositions that predominantly employ Urdu. Many traditional compositions use more than one language, pointing to the fact that composers seem to have been at ease with these languages and their dialects and that they did not mind blending them in a single composition. In other words, for them, each of these languages perhaps, did not exist in isolation. More importantly, while each of these languages may have been spoken predominantly in specific regions of northern India, their seamless intermingling suggests the composers’ ability to look beyond narrow geographical and political boundaries. The fact that vocalists in successive generations have chosen to sing these compositions, often despite the lack of association with these languages as is evident in the prevalence of curious pronunciations or varying interpretations of the text, is equally an indication that we do not after all liv...

Interview: Romila Thapar on the history of dissent and how it shaped Hinduism and India

Image
Romila Thapar is one of India’s most distinguished historians, whose work beginning in the 1960s has sought to nuance our understanding of India’s past. A recipient of the prestigious Kluge Prize, Thapar has covered a whole range of subjects over her long career and is best known for her scholarly work on the social history of ancient India. Thapar has also made headlines over the last few decades by being an outspoken public intellectual who has questioned the version of history put forth by the Right, which tends to portray the Indian past as a simplistic civilisational battle between Hindus and Muslims. In her new book, Voices of Dissent, Thapar looks at moments in India’s past when the dominant narrative was challenged, whether through the “dasas” of the Vedic times, the Shramanas – Buddhists, Jainas and Ajivikas – whose views contrasted with Bhramanism, or through Bhakti sants and Sufi pirs in the medieval era. Thapar writes: “What we call Hinduism has been a religion that ...
