Indian women's tour of Australia postponed from next month to 2021-22 season: Cricket Australia

Image
The Indian women’s team’s wait to resume international cricket since the coronavirus-induced break continued with its scheduled tour of Australia getting postponed to next season, Cricket Australia said on Thursday. The Indian team, which last played the T20 World Cup final in March, was scheduled to play three ODIs on January 22 in Canberra, January 25 in Melbourne and January 28 in Hobart. However, the governing body added the tour will now be a part of the build-up to the 2022 World Cup, which has been pushed to March-April due to the pandemic, and will include three T20Is. “We are very hopeful of delivering an expanded schedule between the Australian and Indian women’s teams for next season, which would be an outstanding result for fans in both countries,” CA interim chief executive officer Nick Hockley said in a statement. “We had initially hoped to play India this summer, however the impact of the global pandemic made it necessary to postpone until next season.” India had l...

La Liga: Luis Suarez helps Atletico beat Getafe and extend lead, Real Madrid slip at Elche

Image
Atletico Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga on Wednesday after Luis Suarez fired them to a 1-0 win over Getafe while Real Madrid could only draw 1-1 at Elche. Suarez struck in the 20th minute with a superb header from Yannick Carrasco’s cross to move Diego Simeone’s Atletico up to 35 points, two ahead of local rivals Madrid after they were pegged back by a Fidel Chaves penalty following Luka Modric’s early opener. Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Villarreal are all a further seven points back, with Barcelona 10 behind Atletico in sixth after their 1-1 draw with Eibar on Tuesday. Atletico have also played two fewer matches than reigning champions Madrid after a scrappy win emblematic of Simeone’s reign on his 500th match as club coach. “When I got on the plane to come here I thought that when I left the club (as a player) that I always wanted to come back,” said Simeone, who is in his 10th year as Atletico coach. “I found men (Koke, Saul Niguez) who wanted to get the club ...

Boss of Bombay Talkies: How Devika Rani fought innuendo and personal tragedy to get back on her feet

Image
Devika was now the acknowledged boss of Bombay Talkies. The years of suffering and abuse were behind her. At last she was being valued for her own hard work as the head of the studio – not because she was Himansu’s wife. Along with her acting skills, her management skills also came to the fore. When questions were raised by shareholders of Bombay Talkies as to why the resignations of so many of their leading artistes (including Ashok Kumar) and technicians had been promptly accepted by HIT, a carefully drafted note was submitted on 27 January 1943 addressed to the chairman of Bombay Talkies, by HIT, the managing agents. The good news for Devika was that from 1943 onwards her salary and bonuses were regularly increased. On 29 December 1943 she received a New Year gift of a bonus of Rs 20,000, from the board of directors of Bombay Talkies, ‘as a token of the Company’s appreciation of the meritorious services rendered by you to the Company’. After years of struggling to make herself fi...

New coronavirus strain may have reached India in November to early December: AIIMS director

Image
All India Institute of Medical Sciences Director Randeep Guleria on Wednesday said it was possible that the more contagious and genetically distinct variant of the coronavirus had penetrated Indian borders in November, a month before it was officially reported in the country, reported ANI. “There is a possibility that this may happen because we must remember that this strain was first reported in the end of September and there were people who have an infection with this strain in the United Kingdom,” Guleria told the news agency. In India, first six cases of the new strain were reported on December 23. By December 30, the tally was up to 20 . Guleria, however, said it was difficult to say for sure when exactly were the first cases reported. “It will depend upon data,” he added. “There are studies being done in our country by the SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia (INSACOG), which are looking at the samples even from November onwards.” The AIIMS director noted that even though the numbe...

New Zealand vs Pakistan: Fast bowler Neil Wagner’s toe injury rules him out of second Test

Image
New Zealand’s first-Test hero Neil Wagner will miss the second Test against Pakistan and is expected to be out for more than five weeks as he recovers from breaking two toes during this week’s dramatic victory, his coach said Thursday. The world’s third-ranked Test bowler suffered the injury while batting and needed pain-killing injections as he bowled 21 overs in Pakistan’s first innings and 28 in the second to play a key role in New Zealand’s win. Wagner’s four wickets included the crucial scalp of Fawad Alam for 102 during a marathon 11-over spell late on the fifth day, when it looked as if Pakistan could hold on for a draw. Their last wicket fell with less than five overs remaining on Wednesday. “The injections he was getting were wearing off each time so he was getting less and less (pain-free) time and we can’t have him going through that again for this Test match,” Stead said as the team arrived in Christchurch ahead of Sunday’s second Test. “Everyone knows Neil plays with ...

Sports in 2020: A reminder of why nostalgia is a good thing, maybe the best of things

Image
The year 2020 witnessed a paucity of live sport like we have not seen in decades. For fans, it meant staying away from stadiums for a large part of the 12 months. For the writers at Scroll.in, it meant a chance to reflect on events in the past and taking stock of what’s to come. This year-end series is a personal take on what covering sports in 2020 was like. “What are you doing when sport itself has been cancelled?” The year 2020 was meant to be a significant one for athletes around the world, across disciplines. Sure, every year and every event is important when you are a professional sportsperson. But this was meant to be the year of two T20 World Cups, a European football championship, and the biggest of them all: the Tokyo Olympic Games. And the regular seasons of events that would go along with these. By extension, it was meant to be one of the busiest times in the lives of those covering these events as well. At the beginning of the year, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to ...

Premier League: Mohamed Salah off target as Liverpool play out goalless draw with Newcastle United

Image
Liverpool squandered the chance to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League in the final English top-flight match of 2020 after being held to a goalless draw by Newcastle United on Wednesday. The 0-0 stalemate at St James’ Park means the champions go into the new year with a three-point lead over Manchester United, having played a game more. But they will rue their missed chances in a match in which they enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession. Mohamed Salah – top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with 13 goals – missed the target either side of half-time with just goalkeeper Karl Darlow to beat and strike-partner Roberto Firmino saw two headers superbly saved. Three days after lowly West Brom snatched a point at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have now won only two of their eight league away games this season, were frustrated once again, although it took a late goal-line clearance from Fabian Schar and Darlow’s brilliance to keep them at bay. Klopp ...

Denied government benefits for over two decades, two Assam villages are camping in Tinsukia town

Image
For more than a week now, the entire populations of two Upper Assam villages – around 3,000 men, women, children, most of them belonging to the state’s Mising tribe – have been camping in Tinsukia town, next to the deputy collector’s office. They have vowed not to move till their demands are met: of being given new lives in a new place. “It is biting cold and we have been living and eating like pigs, but we are not going anywhere because we don’t have anywhere to go,” said 65-year old Rajaram Pait, a resident of Dodhia, one of two villages. The other is Laika. “Maybe this is where our cursed existence will come to an end.” Disease and sickness are already starting to invade the makeshift shelters. A woman fell sick on Tuesday; was rushed back home, but died soon after. Another woman has reportedly become critically ill. Two ‘forest villages’ Laika and Dodhia are “forest villages” – they are located inside the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. But India’s Wildlife Protection Act of 19...

Mangalesh Dabral (1948-2020): All his life, he was essentially writing love poems

Image
No matter what window he looked out of, there would always be a mountain facing him, trees swaying on the slopes. But instead of blocking his view, it sharpened his vision, so much so that he could even see what the tree birds saw in their sleep. Listening to him, you wanted to leave everything to master the language of leaves, whose rustle he wove into whatever he wrote. As for trees, he had this belief: The earth and the sky are present together in them the trees were when we weren’t more than them we have their memories they are made of the sleep of a million sparrows During the ten years I knew Manglesh Dabral, I always wanted to find out what he himself was made of. I can’t say for sure that I have fully succeeded in my quest. His poems, of course, offer a clue, but you still had to meet the man to gauge the full import of his words, which absorbed the compassion his eyes exuded. An undated diary entry shows what he was out to achieve: “Above all, I want to write a luc...

Farm laws: Madhya Pradesh farmers duped of Rs 5 crore, police file FIR

Image
The Madhya Pradesh Police filed a first information report against a trader firm in Hardas district for allegedly duping 150 farmers of over 2,500 quintals of lentil and gram produce worth nearly Rs 5 crore, citing the three farm laws, The Week reported on Wednesday. Harda is the constituency of state Agriculture Minister Kamal Patel. These farmers had sold around 1,131 quintal of chickpea and 1,291 quintal of green gram to Khoja Traders, a firm owned by brothers Pavan and Suresh Khoja. The firm cited the new agricultural legislations for the proposed purchase outside the government-run mandi system, and promised they would pay well above the minimum support price. The new law permits, for the first time, trade in agricultural produce outside the Agricultural Produce Market Committee-regulated mandis. Private mandis can be set up across the country, where anyone can buy produce from farmers. Under the previous system, the buyers had to possess a mandi licence to procure farmer pr...

The backstory: How two strangers saved me from a stampede during the Delhi riots

Image
In this long-running series, Scroll.in reporters look back at their experiences while reporting. On February 24, the road connecting Jafrabad and Maujpur in North East Delhi was tense. Police and paramilitary personnel armed with batons, shields and anti-riot gear were everywhere. Two days earlier, residents and protestors against the Citizenship Amendment Act had occupied the stretch under the Jafrabad metro station, blocking the road. The situation had escalated on February 23 after Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kapil Mishra amassed his followers barely a kilometre from the gathering of people in Jafrabad protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act, which introduces a religious criterion into Indian citizenship law and discriminates against Muslims. With a senior police officer standing next to him, Mishra gave the authorities a three-day ultimatum to clear the protestors from the roads. Otherwise, his followers would have to do so themselves, he said. Mishra’s speech raised tens...

2020 was the year India was supposed to become a superpower. Instead, it got left behind

Image
In 1998, APJ Abdul Kalam, a scientist and administrator associated with India’s missile programme as well as the Pokhran-II nuclear tests, co-authored a book titled India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium. It had a simple message: India would be a superpower within the next two decades. As predictions go, this was extremely bold. In 1998, India was a poor country, unable to reach even average global standards of human development. How would it suddenly leapfrog to superpower status? However, instead of being greeting with scepticism, Kalam’s extreme optimism was met largely with adulation. “Seldom does one, in these troubled times, see such a lucid marshaling of facts and figures to bolster the thesis that India is mere two decades away from super-power status,” wrote The Times of India. The book supercharged Kalam’s popularity, already riding high after the 1998 nuclear tests. He was even elected president. Even today, homilies delivered by Kalam – or sometimes falsely attrib...

ISL, Hyderabad FC vs FC Goa preview: Winless in six, Marquez’s men target leaky Gaurs defence

Image
It has been a mixed campaign for Hyderabad FC so far in the Indian Super League. Manuel Marquez’s side was unbeaten after five games but now back-to-back defeats have seen them slip to eighth on the table. Another stern test in FC Goa awaits them at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Thursday but the Gaurs’ defensive woes will provide Hyderabad the hope to get back on track. Sixth-placed Goa have been among the most fearsome attacking teams this season, having scored 10 goals so far. However, in defense, they have found it hard to keep things tight, conceding 9 goals while recording just one clean sheet. Seven of them have come through set-pieces — the most by a team this season. Marquez is aware of Goa’s defensive struggles and knows his team will have their chances to win. The Nizams, who have often been guilty of missing chances this season, will need to ensure they need to be clinical in front of goal. “These kinds of things (conceding goals) are normal in football,” Marquez said on F...

Tactical tweaks, delightful drift: Breaking down Ashwin Ravichandran’s great form in Australia

Image
During the coronavirus-forced lockdown, Ashwin Ravichandran transformed himself into a YouTube star . While international cricket stopped and restarted, as the Indian Premier League moved to the UAE, the off-spinner slipped into the role of an interviewer and a storyteller. He devised his own way of keeping the negativity out by getting Ranji Trophy winners, ace spinners and other cricketers to speak about their success mantras. In these shows, he would explore the mindset of a champion. And mind you, he is a champion himself. With 10 wickets in two Tests thus far in Australia , the 34-year-old now has 375 wickets to his name . The only Indians ahead of him in the most Test wickets ladder are Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh. In any other cricketing nation, he would have been called a legend now. But in India, Ashwin has struggled to win the battle of perception; the perception that he doesn’t bowl well outside Asia and that his fitness is not up to the mark. There is so...

Premier League: Can’t get ahead of ourselves, says Solskjaer as Man United continue impressive run

Image
Manchester United are recreating the habit of late winners that could lead to an unexpected Premier League title challenge, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Marcus Rashford’s deflected strike deep into stoppage time beat Wolves 1-0 on Tuesday to move United up to second and within two points of leaders Liverpool. After come from behind wins at Brighton and Southampton already this season, United have now won three of their first 15 games of the season in added time, a trait Solskjaer knows well from his playing career at Old Trafford under Alex Ferguson. “It’s one of the points we brought up early in the season, that we didn’t win many points towards the end of games,” said Solskjaer. “We have a tradition for it at this club. Obviously we’ve normally got many more supporters helping us to do that. Now we’ve won many more points towards the end of games and that’s both a mental aspect and a physical aspect.” United laboured for long spells against a youthful Wolves side ...

‘Example of democracy’?: Despite Modi’s claims, allegations of horsetrading mar Kashmir local polls

Image
On December 26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed the recently held District Development Council elections in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir were an “example of democracy”. But the same day, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference vice-president, Omar Abdullah, held a press conference at which he accused the government of “discrediting” democracy in the Union territory. Winning candidates of the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration “are being threatened, humiliated and coerced to join Apni Party, which is a B-team” of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Abdullah was quoted as saying . The Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, of which Abdullah’s National Conference is a member, is a conglomerate of Kashmiri regional parties and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). They are demanding the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution that were revoked in August 2019. The alliance won ...

Absolutely no stress: Cummins backs Australian batsmen to find form in last two Tests against India

Image
Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins said he had “every confidence” Australia’s top batsmen would return to form following an underwhelming first two Tests against India. With the series level at 1-1 heading into the third Test in Sydney, Cummins parried talk of crisis and said batters like Steve Smith – who was named Test player of the decade this week, but has managed just 10 runs in the first two games – would rediscover their touch. “Absolutely no stress,” Cummins said. “They’ll come good. Steve’s been champion for a dozen years or so, so absolutely no stress at all. Every batter, every player, goes through ups and downs and the great ones find a way to get back, so yeah absolutely no stress that they’ll come good, I’m sure.” Australia won the first Test in Adelaide by eight wickets after India suffered their worst ever Test collapse, scoring just 36 in their second innings. But it was India who won by eight wickets in the second Test in Melbourne as their injury-depleted attack...

Premier League: Manchester United leave it late, Arsenal win back-to-back as Covid-19 concerns grow

Image
Marcus Rashford’s 93rd minute strike beat Wolves 1-0 to move Manchester United into second in the Premier League as fears over the continuation of the season due to rising coronavirus infection rates grew on Tuesday. A record 18 positive tests for Covid-19 among players and staff were detected in the weekly round of testing. After Manchester City’s trip to Everton on Monday was postponed due to a Covid outbreak in Pep Guardiola’s squad, all five matches scheduled for Tuesday went ahead despite disruption for Sheffield United and Southampton. Bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United revealed they had suffered a number of positive cases but were still able to field a squad of 18 for their 1-0 defeat at Burnley. Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl coached his side from his home for a 0-0 draw against West Ham after a member of his household tested positive. The Telegraph reported the Premier League will discuss plans for a two-week circuit breaker with infection rates soaring across ...

Premier League: Tottenham Hotspur’s Gareth Bale suffers calf injury, likely to be out for two weeks

Image
Gareth Bale’s stop-start second spell at Tottenham Hotspur has been hit by a fresh injury problem with the Welshman expected to be out for at least two weeks due to a calf injury. Bale sustained the problem in last week’s League Cup quarter-final win at Stoke, where he scored just his third goal in 11 appearances since rejoining Spurs on loan from Real Madrid. However, the majority of those have come in the Europa League with his impact in the Premier League limited to just one start. Bale suffered from a series of calf injuries during his time at Real Madrid and, three months after returning to London, is yet to get up to full match fitness. “I wouldn’t say it’s serious but I’d say a few weeks,” said Mourinho on Bale’s prospects for returning for upcoming games against Fulham and Leeds this week. “I don’t expect him to be fit and also I have my doubts that Lucas (Moura) and (Carlos) Vinicius can be fit for Fulham.” The lack of attacking options will increase Mourinho’s reliance...

La Liga: Barcelona, without Messi, end year on disappointing note with draw against Eibar

Image
Barcelona ended a difficult year with another disappointing result as they were held 1-1 at home by struggling Eibar on Tuesday. The result left Barcelona in sixth place in the La Liga, seven points behind leaders Atletico Madrid who have played two fewer matches. “We have to be realistic,” said Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman. “The league is very complicated. In life nothing is impossible, but you have to recognise the points gap to a team like Atletico, which seems to give very little away.” Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi is nursing an ankle injury and watched from the stands. In his absence Martin Braithwaite took an eighth minute penalty kick, and missed. The Dane did put the ball in the net in the 25th minute but the strike was disallowed. Although Barcelona dominated possession and took far more shots, Eibar took the lead after 57 minutes. Their captain Kike Garcia pounced after a defensive mistake from Ronald Araujo. “I take responsibility,” said Araujo. “I didn...

UP epicentre of hate politics, withdraw ‘love jihad’ law: Over 100 ex-IAS officers to Adityanath

Image
More than 100 former civil servants on Tuesday wrote an open letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath, urging him to withdraw his government’s “illegal and atrocious” anti-conversion law that intends to curb “love jihad”, The National Herald reported. They said the ordinance was being used “as a stick to victimise” especially Muslim men, and women “who dare to exercise their freedom of choice”. “Love jihad” is a term Hindu right-wing groups use to refer to an alleged conspiracy that Muslims are luring Hindu women into marrying them with the sole purpose of converting their brides to Islam. The term was recently given credence in Indian law after Uttar Pradesh brought in the ordinance, which purportedly attempts to punish forced religious conversions. In a month since the law was passed , the state government has made a spate of arrests , targeting Muslim men. The former bureaucrats said that Uttar Pradesh had become the “epicentre of the politics of hate, division and bi...

As 2020 ends, a look back at the old bestseller that looked ahead: APJ Abdul Kalam’s ‘India 2020’

Image
Always there was hope. If all else failed, the promise of 2020 was there. It offered a target, and that always brings together effort, resources and people in a marvellous way. It even offered a plan of action. Through all the ups and downs of the intervening years, from 1998, when India 2020 was published, to 2020, it became a guide to the future. It offered so strong a vision that, as 2020 ends, with all the downers it offered, the dream still survives. It is worthwhile to go back to 1997, when I got the idea for a book that pinned down the fuzzy notion of a developed India and went to meet APJ Abdul Kalam, a meeting whose outcome India 2020 would be. The Indian economy was progressing at a reasonable pace, the streets were bright, shop-shelves had their share of attractive imported goods alongside the homespun fare, the cars were better with just that little edge for some that were roomier and more powerful, such as the Contessa which had been around for several years, and the m...
