Listen: Compositions in raag Hamsadhvani, the sound of the swan

Image
Compositions in raag Hamsadhvani, the sound of the swan The hamsa/hansa and hamsaa/hansaa, commonly heard names for male and female swans in India, have found mention in Indian mythology and spirituality.  They are described as messengers, as a symbol of the individual spirit, and as a vehicle for Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. While there is a profusion of such imagery in poetic texts, it is curious that the bird finds little mention in Hindustani compositions compared to other birds like the peacock, koel, and paprika. Notably, however, there are names of some raags that carry a reference to the bird. Of these, the more popularly heard is Hamsadhvani/Hansadhvani (literally, the sound of the hamsa/Hansa), an import from the Carnatic or South Indian art music tradition. We begin this week’s episode with a rendition by Indore Gharana founder and pathbreaking vocalist Amir Khan, whose inimitable presentations of this raag have been looked up to by musicians from ...

7.35 am: US President Donald Trump says the country is cutting all ties with the World Health Organization. “Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization and redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving, urgent global public health needs,” CNN quotes Trump as saying. “The world needs answers from China on the virus. We must have transparency,” Trump earlier called the WHO China’s “puppet” and cut funding to it. He threatened that the funding freeze would be permanent unless the health body made reforms. 7.22 am: United States records 1,225 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours, bring the toll in the country to 1.02 lakh, with 17.45 overall cases of the virus, AFP reports. #UPDATES US records 1,225 #coronavirus deaths, bringing its total to 102,798 since the pandemic began, with 1,745,606 overall cases of the virus, far more than any other nation, according to the...

How colonial India fought locust attacks – and what we could learn from those tactics

Image
As India struggles to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, it faces a new challenge. Several parts of the country have experienced heavy infestations of locusts – an insect that devours crops and foliage, often leaving devastation in its wake. If there’s a silver lining to this cloud, it is that India has two centuries of experience in dealing with locust swarms. India’s Locust Warning Organisation, which is at the forefront of battling the infestation, was established 81 years ago during the colonial era. Perhaps India could use some lessons from the past to avert the crisis that the current locust outbreaks might trigger. It is not surprising that the colonial authorities made relentless efforts not only to contain the threat of locusts but also understand the science behind infestations. After all, the insects had the power to devastate the agricultural economy. For the British imperialist state which drew significant revenue from exploitation of Indian agriculture, locusts posed no tr...

Across India, lockdown forced women to make perilous journeys home. Some never made it

Hemlata Nihal Singh’s life ended at 30. She had two children and a husband she had been married to for 13 years. In her short life, she made a long journey from the place of her birth in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district to Ahmedabad in Gujarat, about 1,200 km away. The journey back killed her. “I took permission from the collector before leaving Gujarat for my village in my auto,” her husband, Nihal Singh, was particular to say. Singh drove an auto rickshaw in Ahmedabad, earning between Rs 100 and 300 a day. When transport was banned because of the nationwide lockdown imposed on March 24 to contain the coronavirus, Singh was out of work. “I was sitting at home for a month and a half,” he said. “We had no money left to eat, our landlord was asking us for rent. It was better to die in our village than starve to death in the city. If I died alone in the city, my parents would worry.” So they decided to make the journey back to his village, Parasar ki Garhi in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena di...
